Listen to Lotus Evija sing its hyper-EV engine tune

Patrick Jordan-Patrikios, a British songwriter and producer skilled with musical instruments, has come up with a faux engine sound to use in Lotus’ grandest supercar to date, the Evija.

Patrikios had originally intended to endow the silent car with a single distinct, sonorous voice, but ended up designing a whole set of sound effects instead. He took the Cosworth-Ford DFV V8 sound as the starting point, recording it off a Lotus Type 49 racer that participated in Formula One championships in 1967 through 1970. The initial goal was to come up with a sound for acceleration, but the musician went far beyond that. Watch the video to learn more.

The Lotus Evija debuted two summers ago, becoming the first full-fledged EV to bear a Lotus badge. Shipments had been scheduled for late 2020, but the pandemic disruption saw them postponed until ‘at least’ May 2021. The company used the time thus freed to further optimize the engine, getting it from 2,000 PS (1,972 hp / 1,471 kW) to 2,028 PS (2,000 hp / 1,491 kW).
