Polestar to invest in batteries taking 15 minutes to fully charge

Polestar has officially announced an intention to invest in StoreDot, an Israeli startup firm specializing in rapid-charge battery research and development. The goal is to design a car traction battery capable of reaching 100% charge within 15 minutes.

In two years, StoreDot plans to be able to produce power cells granting you 160 km (100 miles) of extra range after five minutes of charging. By 2028, the company hopes to reduce that time to three minutes.

Polestar wants to launch multiple joint projects with StoreDot. The automaker calls these ‘pilot projects’ at this time, but if everything goes well, the first such batteries will reach production EVs in four years’ time.
As of right now, the Swedish carmaker installs 155kW traction batteries into its vehicles that take 35 minutes to replenish from zero to 80 percent.

Volvo, the company that originally founded Polestar, announced its own cooperation with StoreDot a month ago. The Israeli startup also has current business ties with BP, Daimler AG, Samsung and VinFast, among others.
