Video: 750-PS BMW X3 M shows itself in action

The opinion that a sports car will always outperform an SUV has aged like milk. Granted, a sedan or coupe may be more agile on a track with many turns, but give an SUV a long, straight road, and chances are you won’t see the appeal of a dedicated sports coupe. Case in point: this BM3 X3 M tuned to reach 300 km/h (186 mph).

Pure Turbos outfitted the stock six-cylinder engine with a couple of in-house-designed turbochargers, boosting the standard output of the car by 240 PS (237 hp / 176 kW) and 340 Nm (251 lb-ft) of torque. The end result is 750 PS (740 hp / 552 kW) and 940 Nm (693 lb-ft) of torque.

Of course, the dyno will never show the whole truth, so the car was put through an acceleration test on a real speedway in Germany. It managed to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) within just 2.9 seconds from the launch, then doubled that acceleration in 9.6 seconds and covered a quarter of a mile in 10.53 seconds. The top speed fell slightly short of the claimed figure at 290 km/h (180 mph), but it looked like the car could easily go there with a bit of preparation.
