Great Wall rolls out a six-wheel truck with a totally original name

The Great Wall Cyberpickup has three driven axles, multiple diff locks and a hybrid powertrain good for 517 PS (510 hp / 380 kW). The company does not say when or whether it may reach the market in the future.

The underpinning platform is that of the mass-produced Shanhai Poer, albeit stretched by 52 cm (20.3 inches). This means the whole truck is nearly six meters (19.7 feet) long. The added third axle is driven through a purpose-designed transmission and transfer case. There are five differentials in total – three interaxle diff locks and two inter-wheel ones.

The suspension makes use of aluminum arms and sports-grade dampers, while the wheels are forged and shod in 33-inch rubber. Powering the ride is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 mated to an electric motor and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The combined output amounts to 517 PS (510 hp / 380 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, but going from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) only succeeds in 7.5 seconds.

Elsewhere, the overlanding machine flaunts sporty bumpers, an impressively sized front grille and a roll bar over the bed. The interior makes use of premium trim materials of lighter hues, not a common choice for most off-roaders. To minimize weight, the manufacturer used carbon fiber parts throughout. We are told Great Wall Motors wanted to keep the truck within a certain category, but the details are unknown.

According to GWM representatives at the company’s Shanghai expo booth, the Cyberpickup was built to showcase the advantages of an innovative three-axle platform. In theory, the carmaker will later be able to build vehicles of various classes and purposes based on it. In practice, it remains to be seen when or even if it will ever find use in an actual production car.
