Rivian puts a premiere date on the R2

U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has officially confirmed that its affordable crossover known as the R2 will debut at a dedicated event in Laguna Beach, California on March 7.

The company has not supplemented any details about the car itself. So far, all we have seen of it was a life-size clay mockup covered with cloth. It looked about as boxy as the R1T pickup and R1S SUV currently on sale, though, so you can dive into the gallery and the video here to get an idea of what to expect.

Compared to these two models, the R2 is expected to be much smaller in size and largely designed for urban use. When it comes out, it will most likely compete with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Tesla Model Y in their market segment.
Back in December, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the R2 would start from around $45,000–50,000. For comparison, the R1T pickup starts from $80,800 before options.

Although the premiere is right around the corner, Rivian warns that it will not be able to deliver the R2 until at least early 2026. It will go into production at a $5,000,000,000 factory being constructed in the U.S. state of Georgia right now. Once it ships, the company plans to release a handful more EVs named from R3 through R5 – the corresponding trademarks have already been registered.
