Volvo ditches diesel passenger cars

Volvo Cars is officially done with putting diesel engines into light passenger vehicles.

The last Volvo with a turbo diesel in the engine bay was a blue XC90 SUV (see video). It was assembled in Torslanda, Sweden and went straight into the company’s museum.

The company had been making diesel cars since 1979 based on engines sourced from Audi. It wasn’t until 2001 that Volvo developed a diesel engine for itself.

In the meantime, the company continues making petrol cars. They are set to be discontinued by the start of the next decade, phased out completely by EVs.
