Video: Watch Xiaomi produce the SU7 without human aid

YouTube channel Daily Revs has posted a video showcasing the production processes at the Xiaomi factory making the SU7 sedan. The footage makes it look like the whole facility makes do without humans for most tasks – there’s only one person in the frame during the welding/painting phase, or example.

The body of the car is assembled in a fully unattended fashion by robots. Machines stamp the needed components, weld them together, prime for painting, and paint. Driverless carts carry larger parts between facilities. The whole assembly line is supervised by a single human operator sitting in an office looking at monitors.

The production takes place in Beijing, China at a factory the construction of which Xiaomi completed two years ago. It is believed that the IT giant received assistance from BAIC Group for this project. At first, the industrial complex will be making no more than 150,000 vehicles per year, but the nominal production capacity is estimated at 300,000. That’s quite a lot for any single factory, but possible with enough automation.

The SU7 went on sale in late March. It was offered in three trim levels priced from 215,990 to 299,900 Yuan and immediately proceeded to become a sales hit. CarNewsChina reckons that the company should have sold out the entire 100,000 units scheduled for production this year via reservations by now.
