Stellantis CEO: EVs in their current state are pointless

Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares believes that modern electric cars don’t make much sense in terms of environmental preservation.

The main culprit, according to him, is the extremely high weight of traction batteries. Compared to traditional cars rated for 400 km (250 miles) of range per tank, EVs with the same range rating tend to weigh around 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) more. This results in excess material expenditure and later also complicates recycling.

At the same time, Tavares said he hoped that the batteries would shed at least half of their current weight after 2030. In the next decade, Stellantis plans to sell at least 5,000,000 EVs per year.
