Electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class bows in Europe

Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the battery-electric G-Wagen, landing the iconic SUV with its usual body-on-frame design, but a totally different powertrain.

The electric Geländewagen won’t be called EQG like the company had intended before. Instead, it will be known simply as the G 580. Its four electric motors drive one wheel each, allowing for a wide range of features unavailable in ICE cars. These range from all kinds of differential locks to the ability to make a full standing turn (also known as the “tank turn”).

Each motor delivers 147 PS (145 hp / 108 kW), with the total summing up to 588 PS (580 hp / 432 kW). The torque peaks at a lofty 1,164 Newton-meters (860 lb-ft). The off-roader reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds and maxes out at 180 km/h (112 mph).

The battery pack is impressively large at 116 kWh and delivers up to 473 km (294 miles) of driving range according to the strict WLTP standard.

The starting price is €142,600.
