Porsche 911 (992.2) announced with hybrid specs

Porsche has begun updating its 911 model lineup for the next model year. The latest modification will be known as the 992.2 and brings extra power to both Carrera and GTS variants. The latter is now half-a-second faster on the uptake thanks to an efficient hybrid powertrain.

The system is based on the company’s modified 3.6-liter flat-six engine, which ditches twin turbos in favor of a single electric supercharger. The supercharger drive unit doubles as a generator. A small electric motor built into the eight-speed PDK transmission assists with the acceleration and sources its power from a tiny 1.9-kWh battery. Porsche doesn’t explicitly mention all-electric driving in the announcement, and everything suggests that the car has none.

In hybrid mode, the powertrain hits the wheels with a combined 541 PS (534 hp / 398 kW) and 610 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque, surpassing the pre-facelift GTS by around 60 horsepower. It is also roughly 50 kilos (110 lbs) heavier, but can still sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3 seconds flat and reach 312 km/h (194 mph) in a straight line. This almost puts it on par with the latest 911 Turbo. 21-inch wheels, four-wheel steering and adjustable shock absorbers are already included in the base trim. The ground clearance loses another 10 mm (0.4 inches) compared to the old model.

As for the Carrera, it also makes use of an improved powertrain, but the scope of changes is rather modest. The 3.0-liter flat-six mill gains the same turbocharger setup as the pre-facelift GTS had, plus a new intercooler. As a result, it hits the wheels with 394 PS (389 hp / 290 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). The sprint time is decent at 3.9 seconds (previously 4 seconds), and the top speed is now stated as 294 km/h (182.7 mph), which is just 1 kilometer per hour or 0.6 mph faster than before.

Manual transmission is not an option, at least at this time.
