Hongqi’s least expensive SUV becomes a long-range hybrid

After previewing a plug-in hybrid version of its HS3 crossover at the Beijing Auto Show this spring, the Chinese premium automaker is getting ready to launch it next month, AutoHome reports.

The compact-sized Hongqi HS3 PHEV looks the same as its gas-powered counterpart unless you count the badge on the tailgate. The same goes for the interior, where we don’t expect much novelty aside from some hybrid-specific gauges on the digital dash.

As for the powertrain, there are still no official specifications. Leaked data suggests that the SUV will cover 115 km (71.5 miles) in all-electric mode and around 1,100 km (683 miles) from a full tank. The media in China speculate that it will utilize a 1.5-liter engine rated at 170 PS (168 hp / 125 kW) and a single electric motor, but this remains to be confirmed.
