1,500-HP Buick restomod snatches this year’s Goodguys Gold Prize

A 1987 Buick Grand National GNXS has won the prestigious Goodguys Gold award at the SEMA show this year. It took Dutchboys Hotrods over 10,000 hours of work to turn the retro car into a masterpiece on wheels.

The body of the Buick migrated to a new frame and chassis from Detroit Speed, improving its stiffness, handling and suspension parameters. The tuner took care to upgrade the brakes and the steering mechanism as well, ensuring that the restomod feels and behaves like a modern car on the road.

An exclusive handmade set of wheels by Greening Auto Company adorned the arches alongside tastefully round fenders. The wheels are 20 inches large and reach a width of 12 inches at the rear end.

Things get especially interesting under the hood, where an LS7 V8 toils, sending 1,500 horsepower (1,119 kilowatts) to the wheels thanks to a pair of high-end turbochargers. This is not to say the interior is any less remarkable – Dutchboys Hotrods actually scanned the entire cabin of the original car in 3D to understand how to redesign it. The all-new dash panel, the seamlessly integrated digital instrument cluster and the all-new center console wouldn’t be possible without it.

Check out the full 18-minute-long video for a detailed overview of this outstanding project.
