Nissan admits that no hybrids was a no-go

Nissan is in a severe crisis right now with workers being laid off worldwide, production volumes falling and several factories facing shutdowns.

The company has been tight-lipped with regard to the reasons so far, but CEO Makoto Uchida let it slip in his latest interview that ignoring hybrids was one of Nissan’s biggest mistakes of the past several years. The brand has hardly any part-electric vehicles on its current lineup, which hurts popularity and sales.

Making since worse for Uchida is the fact that he was an outspoken vindicator of the idea of full electrification, telling his company that it could “skip” the hybrid stage on its way to full-fledged EVs.

With the EV market in a downward spiral, Uchida’s misjudgment may cost him his career in the near future.
