Renault brings back the 5 Turbo, of course it’s an EV

The so-called Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a hot hatchback set to debut in the coming weeks. While nominally based on a concept car by the same name from two years ago, it draws its design inspiration from the iconic Model Five from the 1980s.

Judging by the images, the new 5 Turbo gets a much wider track compared to the original, as well as boxy fenders, a sophisticated aero kit complete with a giant rear diffuser and spoiler, and no rear side doors. The company mentions ubiquitous use of carbon fiber throughout, so it may end up weighing on par with the original.

It is shaping up to be quite the beast, too, with a promised output of 500+ horsepower (373+ kilowatts) from two motors. Note that, just like the original 5 Turbo model, its electric successor keeps the drive on the rear axle. This means that it uses its dual motors to drive one wheel each. The company reckons it should be good for a 3.5-second sprint time.

The premiere is expected sometime in 2025, but we can’t say when exactly yet.
