Quality Mercedes-Benz Gullwing replica on sale for $200k

A 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK 320 skillfully converted into a Gullwing lookalike is being traded on Bring-a-Trailer right now.

The owner of the had it stripped down to the chassis and rebuilt using glass-fiber panels. A new frame was installed to support gull-wing doors. The interior was left largely stock at first, but later received a Gullwing-style steering wheel and a period-correct dashboard. According to the owner, he managed to procure a number of OEM Gullwing parts for the build, so it shouldn’t be surprising that it looks so good.

The 3.2-liter V6 under the hood continued to churn out its usual 218 PS (215 hp / 160 kW) to the wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. It did receive an ABS and a traction control system for a more modern driving experience, though.

Strictly speaking, the quality of execution isn’t stellar. The replica still has an SLK 320 handbrake, not very convincing aftermarket wheels and a hood that opens the wrong way compared to the original. That, and the mileage counter shows 60,000 km (37,000 miles) of use. Even so, the bidding has already reached $200,000 with several hours left on the auction clock.
