VW Works Council steps in against mass layoffs

According to Daniela Cavallo, Volkswagen’s labor chief, the car company doesn’t have to shut down factories and fire workers in Germany in order to stay afloat.

In her latest interview, Cavallo reasoned that staff payments only constitute a modest part of the automaker’s total expenses. Cutting the bonuses paid to mid-tier and senior executives would make more financial sense, she said.

This actually sounds interesting because Volkswagen AG has been infamously paying enormous bonuses to its execs over the past several years, amidst falling sales and failed product launches. It could very well have contributed to the dire financial situation that the company is in right now.
