Oldie, but Goldie: 1991 Porsche 911 fetches $72k

A street-legal Porsche 911 roadster rebuilt into a full-fledged racing machine for the United States just found a new owner on Bring-a-Trailer, who paid $72,000 for it.

The car saw two major rebuilds – in the late ‘90s and in 2007. Some modernization also took place in 2020. For starters, it lost its original bodywork and received lightweight composite panels instead, making it look like the 911 GT2. The 911 (996) racecar donated its humongous rear wing for the project, new wheels were sourced from an aftermarket company, and the soft top was replaced with a metallic one.

The interior was stripped bare and retrofitted with a roll cage, a single carbon-backed Recaro seat, an OMP detachable steering wheel, some additional gauges and a fire extinguisher. Major modifications were made in the suspension department with the shock absorbers, the arms and the sway bars all new. Last but not least, bigger brakes were sourced from the more recent 911 models.

In its stock form, the retro 911 produced roughly 250 PS (246 hp / 183 kW). The owner swapped the OEM engine for a 3.8-liter JWE racing mill mated to a six-speed manual transmission and a differential taken from a 911 GT3 Cup model. The listing neglected to name the output, but we suspect there was plenty of power and torque heading to the rear axle.
