Honda launches world’s first Pikes Peak racecar on hydrogen

The niche hydrogen production vehicle known as the Honda CR-V e:FCEV has just received a track-ready counterpart that will be attending the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event on Sunday, June 22.

Since no other hydrogen vehicle had ever ascended the treacherous mountain trail before, Honda chose to compete in the Exhibition category of the race, which has no strict limitations on the powertrains and technology used.

Compared to its stock version (see video), the racing-tuned Honda CR-V e:FCEV ended up with a revised suspension setup, a roll cage and other basic track necessities. It retained the original engine and hydrogen power generator. The generator outputs 125 horsepower (92.2 kW), while the only e-motor available drives the front axle with 176 PS (174 hp / 129 kW) and 311 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque.
