Lamborghini Huracan to get a part-electric successor, reports say

Lamborghini is allegedly working on replacing the Huracan’s naturally aspirated V10 with a V8-based hybrid powertrain combining the features of a non-turbo and a turbo engine in one block, MotorTrend reports.

According to anonymous sources, the Italian automaker plans to use at least one electric motor in the drivetrain, putting it between the IC engine and the transmission. Additional motors may be used at the front axle. Whether charging from the power grid will be possible remains unclear. For instance, the Lamborghini Sian came equipped with supercapacitors that did not need external charging.

The petrol V8 rumored to reside under the hood of the next-gen Huracan is expected to remain normally aspirated throughout most of its rev count range, only engaging the turbos between 8,000 and 10,000 RPM for maximum output. Drivers who would rather drive a non-turbo supercar will simply need to stay below the redline stated above.

Insiders are also saying that the company finds itself forced to reuse the current Huracan architecture (see the gallery) with some modifications. Allegedly, developing the new engine is expensive enough as is to try and design a brand-new platform alongside it. Still, since all the battery cells will be taking up space, the Huracan successor might end up being slightly larger than the current-gen coupe.

The premiere date remains to be announced.
