$1M Mustang heading to auction in late March

The ultra-rare 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback packs supercar performance and may sell for up to $1,000,000, according to experts.

Back in 1969, the Holman-Moody racing team built a total of 10 extremely powerful engines for its M6B McLaren Can-Am racecar driven by Mario Andretti. It had 8.1 liters of displacement and hit the rear wheels with 788 PS (777 hp / 580 kW) through a six-speed manual transmission.

Tom Fry, a hot rod enthusiast, sourced one of these engines for a custom build some 15 years ago. He installed it into the Mustang seen here and dubbed the car “The Real Thing”. It’s considered one of the world’s most famous and aggressive Mustang builds.

The car had stood in the garage for a few decades before the swap, so it had only little mileage on by the time it was overhauled. The bodywork was cut and reshaped, an all-new chassis was fabricated for the project, and numerous reinforcements were made to accommodate the massive engine block. Air suspension was implemented at all four corners.

The seller is none other than Tom Fry Jr. According to him, no one has driven The Real Thing since his father passed away a few years ago, and that’s not the future it deserves.
