BYD outsells Toyota in Japan

Electric vehicles found 59,736 buyers in Japan last year, marking a steep 33% drop from 2023 and a dismal 2% share in new car sales.

Nissan led the ranking with over 50% of all EVs (30,749 units) sold in the country last year. It’s still not a huge achievement, because it’s 44% down from the preceding year.

What’s more surprising, though, is that Toyota sold a meager 2,038 units distributed between just two models – a 30% drop compared to the year before. In contrast, Chinese automaker BYD sold four electric models in Japan last year and managed to find buyers for 2,223 examples, marking a 54% growth.

That’s an impressive result for a carmaker that came to the country not even two years ago.
