Car Tuning

How do you like this Porsche 928 with Mazda MX-5 looks?

A tuned 1987 Porsche 928 cropped up on sale in the U.S. earlier this week sporting a Spyder body alongside other unusual modifications.

The listing didn’t mention it outright, but we believe the car was built by the now-defunct tuning shop SpyderWerks in the ‘90s. They specialized in converting Porsches into what passed for a premium-looking convertible back in the era. It included a chopped roof with a soft top, bulging rear quarter panels, a downsized radiator grille and round headlamps. Considered separately, these modifications may be passable and even tasteful, but together they turn this Porsche into a Mazda MX-5 Miata lookalike. Whether that’s a win or not is up to you.

Inside, a new Momo steering wheel, retrimmed door panels and a revised dashboard sum up the changes. The odometer has barely more than 9,000 km (5,700 miles) on it.

Mecum Auctions tried to sell the car earlier this week. The bidding hadn’t moved past $15,000, and the auction was cancelled. We suspect that the fact that the 928 had a crashed/salvage title prior to the restoration played a major role in that.
