Toyota has two Sienna MPVs on sale in China under different names

Toyota launched a new minivan called Granvia in China on May 25, 2022, and we couldn’t help noticing it was largely just a rebadged Sienna sold on the same market. So, what is the point?

Before we begin, a clarification is necessary. The Granvia is being made at the factory owned by FAW-Toyota joint stock company, while the older Sienna model is being assembled at GAC-Toyota JSC. Selling multiple generations of the same car under different name is common in China: one example would be the Mazda6, which had once existed in three generations sold side-by-side. Sometimes the same factory handles the production, other times different factories do it.

So, how is the new Granvia different from the Sienna? Well, it has a different front grille with a honeycomb pattern, revised bumpers and no chrome on the door sills. That would be all, though. At 5,175 x1,995 x 1,785 mm L/W/H with 3,060 mm of wheelbase, it is completely identical to the Sienna in terms of size.

The powertrain also stays untouched: the same 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine gets assistance from an electric motor to drive the wheels with 249 PS (246 hp / 183 kW) in total. The transmission has a CVT box, and the drive is on the front axle.
