Mercedes-Benz GLC EV revealed ahead of September premiere

Mercedes-Benz has shared some test footage of its electric GLC, which is expected to debut at the IAA Munich in September. The model will no longer be called “EQC”; the company is considering “GLC with EQ Technology”.

While the details remain vague, we already know that the car is being designed on an 800-volt power architecture. As such, it will be able to charge up quickly from 320kW sources and ship with a variety of battery packs to choose from. Mercedes promises us different battery sizes and chemical compositions, as well as a mandatory heat pump to keep the power cells warm in wintertime. On top of that, a new climate control system has been developed with up to 67% less power consumption.

In the powertrain department, Mercedes speaks about brand-new “power units” that incorporate state-of-the-art motors, invertors and reducers. The base GLC will be a rear-wheel-drive SUV with a two-speed reduction gear. All higher versions will take advantage of a second motor on the rear axle. Drivers will be able to disengage it completely when not needed.

Another noteworthy feature is coming in the form of a braking system that packages the power brake, the main cylinder and the ESP module into a single compact unit. Regenerative braking is more efficient than ever, and all the different mechanical units now exchange real-time data to enable seamless performance. Lastly, Mercedes mentions highly responsive throttle and efficient braking in all situations.

As soon as it wraps up its winter testing stage, the GLC EV will travel to South Africa for some trials in scorching heat.
