Subaru Crosstrek gets a powerful hybrid version

The North American branch of Subaru has introduced a new XT/Crosstrek spec running a 2.5-liter engine and an electric motor for 197 PS (194 hp / 145 kW) total. The sales will begin in the fall.

The powertrain announced last year is all-new and incorporates an Atkinson-cycle engine functioning as a range extender, an electric motor actually driving the wheels, a starter-generator assisting the main motor, and a Lineartronic variable transmission. With a battery size of just 1.1 kilowatt-hours, it is not chargeable.

Subaru emphasizes that the car fully retains its mechanical all-wheel drive system.

Back in October 2024, the company announced a goal to make all future cars 20% more fuel-efficient. The new Crosstrek was on the list, too, so it should offer more range per full tank. That, and Subaru says it will ship with a bigger gas tank to begin with.

Trim-wise, this year’s SUV will get a 12.3-inch digital dashboard, an 11.6-inch infotainment display and the full EyeSight ADAS package included as standard. The Hybrid spec will ship in two new exterior colors with exclusive 18-inch wheels.
