The Equus Bass 770 is an exotic restomod with strong Mustang & Challenger vibes

Since 2013, Equus Automotive has been producing elite custom cars called Equus Bass 770 based on the Ford Mustang fastbacks from the 1960s. Care for a closer look?

The old Mustang gets a thorough stylistic makeover in this bespoke version, gaining traits of such classics as the Dodge Charger/Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda, and Pontiac GTO. The result is a unique and memorable look that nonetheless leaves no doubt that the car is a Mustang. Major features include Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and coilover-based suspension.

It is under the hood, however, that things become truly interesting. Powering the Bass 770 is the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, it sends up to 640 hp (477 kW) along with 819 Nm (604 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels. Hitting sixty miles per hour from standstill takes mere 3.4 seconds, and the max speed lies at 200 mph (322 km/h).

The cabin is every bit as deluxe as the tech, and the tuner even attempts to maintain the vintage car aura of the 1960s here. However, the numerous carbon fiber and aluminum inserts, as well as plentiful modern features instantly reveal that it is a restomod, after all.

How popular is the Equus Bass 770? Consider that, while orders are supposed to start at U.S. $250,000 or so, the Equus team has its hands tied with projects worth around $500,000 each. It would seem that the demand for the ultimate American muscle car experience never trickles out…
