Stretched BMW M5 gets an update in China

The 2021 facelift version of the long-wheelbase BMW M5 will debut at the auto show in Beijing set for September 26 – October 5, 2020.

The car now has 3,105 millimeters of inter-axle spacing (+13mm) and sports new headlights, grille, bumpers, wheels and body colors. This is largely in line with what its non-stretched counterpart is getting in China.

No interior shots have been released so far, but one could expect a new steering wheel and a multimedia system powered by a new OS, with faster navigation and Android Auto support. The Sky Lounge panoramic sunroof will continue to be available with its “Starry Sky” pattern, and rear seat occupants will still enjoy their two adjustable entertainment displays.

The only spec announced for model year 2021 so far is 535Le. The designation is China-only, but the powertrain is actually analogous to the European 530e version (see video). It ties together a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor for 292 hp (218 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque. The transmission is eight-speed automatic, and the car burns mere 1.5 liters of fuel per 100 km. CO2 emissions are also well controlled at 36g/km.

The pre-facelift 5 Series shipped in China with gasoline turbo engines rated at 184, 252 and 340 horsepower, available with eight-speed auto and RWD/AWD.
