DS fantasizes about the interior of the future

The design studio of DS Automobiles has come up with an interior concept for a future car. Called Mi 21, it focuses on the new features that the premium car marque plans to implement in its production vehicles.

The dash panel is downsized, the transmission tunnel is removed and the greenhouse is enlarged to create a sense of freedom. The assorted luggage compartments are inspired by designer furniture, while adaptive ambient lighting helps create a pleasant sensory experience, the company says.

The light comes from large round fixtures built into the doors, leaving no room for speakers. The sound comes from a single round speaker located in the middle of the dash. According to the design team, it looks better than multiple speakers and blends in with the rest of the cabin nicely. Getting rid of the additional satellite speakers frees up more space to work with.

Interestingly enough, the authors of the concept propose ditching the touchscreens that tend to dominate the scenery in most premium vehicles nowadays. When not in use, these screens look rather unappealing, DS argues. As such, the Mi 21 Concept replaces them with a single semi-transparent pane of glass onto which you can choose to project various images. The two displays at the sides are traditional LCDs, though, and their purpose is to display the footage from the rearview cameras.

According to the official comment, the Mi 21 is a “five-year roadmap” for the manufacturer, meaning that some of its features will find implementation in mass-market DS cars until 2028.
