Reports: Next-gen Toyota Hilux coming this year

Toyota has patented the next generation of its Hilux pickup in Thailand, Headlight reports quoting the country’s vehicle certification database. Everything points at the truck going on sale sometime in 2025.

The patent application is for a “Hilux Travo”. It’s a new name, and we fully expect Toyota to use it on the Thai market alone. The current generation of the truck – seen in the gallery and the video here – is being sold in the country under the name “Hilux Revo”. Its predecessor was known as the Hilux Vigo.

Rumors indicate that the new generation will stay true to its body-on-frame formula. We are told that the design will be updated slightly to enhance steering and enable support for more ADAS features. The engine lineup will also likely undergo a minor overhaul to conform with the latest emission standards. Things are shaping up differently in the design department – it looks like both the body and the cabin will be redone from scratch. Last but not least, a Hilux EV is also a possibility.

According to Carscoops, Toyota has plenty of reasons not to delay the next generation any further. The original truck was introduced way back in 2015, and all of its rivals have received meaningful updates since. For instance, the Mitsubishi L200 currently sold in Thailand is much more advanced than the Hilux. Ford plans to refresh its Ranger lineup this year, and Kia wants to bring its first-ever pickup – the Tasman – to the Thai market as well. Add the ever-increasing pressure from Chinese brands to the mix, and it should be abundantly clear that competition is stiff in this niche.
