Rare AC Schnitzer-tuned BMW 7-Series crops up on sale

This 1999 BMW 740i (E38) was built by the Japanese branch of AC Schnitzer. It is now up for grabs with 75,600 km (47,000) miles under its belt and a buy-it-now price of $40,000. For perspective, similar stock sedans cost around the $15,000 mark in the United States.

The famous German aftermarket brand equipped this luxury saloon with a body-matching aero kit, sports-grade suspension struts and springs, larger brake calipers and 19-inch Type IV alloy wheels. Lights were replaced with LEDs all around, and a sports exhaust system was installed for a louder engine soundtrack.

Novelty inside was limited to an oak-rimmed steering wheel and a new multimedia system. The black leather trim is stock and visibly worn in places. The 4.4-liter V8 under the hood is largely standard, too, but software tweaks raise its output by 28 horsepower for a total of 314 PS (310 hp / 231 kW) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque.

The car appears to be in fine technical condition despite its age and mileage. The question is, would you ever consider buying one for the asking price?
