BMW 4 Series goes topless

The new BMW 4-Series Coupe debuted four months ago, and its convertible counterpart follows suit now. Despite the switch from hard top to soft, the manufacturer claims the comfort level is top-notch and the weight savings are 40 %.

Compared to the previous generation, the new 4 Series Cabrio gains 15 liters of trunk space with the fabric top raised (385 liters / 13.6 cubic feet) and 80l with it folded down (300 liters / 10.6 cu.ft.).

The engine range is the same as in the coupe version with only one exception: the diesel-powered 420d Cabrio only supports real-wheel drive, whereas its 190-hp (142-kW) coupe sibling is obtainable with optional AWD. At the top of the range is the M440i xDrive Cabrio, which extracts 374 hp (279 kW) out of its turbo-six engine and hits 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The coupe model with the same engine manages it a bit faster: 4.5 s.

All diesel powertrains, as well as the topmost petrol one, come with an electric starter-generator that contributes 11 hp / 8 kW of its own. The transmission is eight-speed automatic, and BMW M accessories are going to be available as usual.

Sales begin in March 2021.
