Subaru Levorg wears an airbag on the outside to protect pedestrians

The Levorg is a less popular Subaru wagon that came out in Australia and some countries across Europe a while ago, although the second generation never made it outside of its home market. Nevertheless, it can do something others cannot.

The second-gen Subaru Levorg comes with an optional STI package that grants it a sportier appearance, but you could as well invest your money into something smarter. Specifically, it is an external airbag that inflates on the hood to protect pedestrians in the event of a collision.

The safety device is meant to cushion the hardest part of the car front, specifically, the area at the base of the windshield. It reaches hallway up the a-pillars when expanded. Subaru warns that it may not trigger if the speed is too low or the impact is not strong enough.

Actually, the Levorg is not the first car to adopt the technology. Volvo released its V40 with a pedestrian-protecting airbag in 2012. Unfortunately, most manufacturers seem to have no interest in this safety measure.
