This 20-year-old Jeep Cherokee XJ restomod costs like a new Cherokee Trailhawk

Davis AutoSports spent the last year restoring this 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ to its former glory, and is now counting on getting at least $38,900 for it. Or, you could go for a factory-new Cherokee Trailhawk for a grand less.

What does the buyer get for the money? The body has been completely refurbished and finished in eight total layers of primer and paint. The headlamps are LED-based now, the roof rack is new, and so are 16-inch Das Moab wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber. As for the suspension, the seller claims it has been redone from the ground up based on upmarket components.

The photos do an admittedly poor job revealing the interior, but the company claims there is new and improved noise proofing, floor mats, and heated leather seats. The driver gets a seven-inch infotainment screen with sat-nav, a Polk audio system, and a back-up camera.

The four-liter inline-six under the hood takes advantage of some extra displacement, improved cooling and a revised rear differential gear ratio, among other things. Regrettably, nothing is said about the actual power output.

Given the amount of effort invested in the build, we are inclined to say we understand why it costs so much. Would we be willing to pay for it? That is a different question.
