Car Tuning

Interested in a unique-if-battered Volkswagen-Porsche?

The Volkswagen-Porsche Kaiserslautern was a one-off car produced 63 long years ago. It is now on sale in dismal condition with a rather bold asking price of £64.995.

The base vehicle was a 1958 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, which a team of students from MHK, one of Germany’s largest high schools with free education, turned into something unique. If we had to nitpick, the students built a total of four vehicles based on the Karmann Ghia, but each one ended up with its own, inimitable, hand-built bodywork. The panels were made of steel, with the hood and the trunk lid offset in aluminum.

Power for the experimental car came from a Porsche 356 engine. The same model donated its four-speed transmission to the cause, while the 356 Carrera provided the brakes and the wheels.

Why the owner of this collection-worthy exotic let it come to ruin like this remains unexplained. There is a small chance that the drivetrain is in a marginally better condition than the body and cabin, but we are skeptical. A serious restoration is going to be a must if the coupe is ever to go again.
