Exotic AMG 560SEC fails to sell for $550k

Back when it was still independent from Mercedes-Benz, AMG produced some of its most impressive and original tuning projects. One of the most remarkable ones was the AMG 560SEC Widebody Coupe, which hit an auction several days ago.

Fewer than 50 such cars ever saw the light of the day. This example rolled out of the AMG garage in 1989 and proceeded to be shipped to Japan. In 2016, it went into Europe, visiting Austria and the UK as it did so, and later landed in the USA. It had roughly 90,000 km (56,000 miles) under its belt at the time of sale.

AMG outfitted the car with a 6.0-liter non-turbo V8 mated to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The engine made 390 PS (385 hp / 287 kW) when new. Custom-made Bilstein shocks were put into the suspension, and OZ Racing wheels filled out the arches along with Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 tires.

The cabin is just as exciting with a Momo steering wheel, climate control and heated power seats from Recaro. Natural wood trim on the dashboard and the console also helps with the “classy retro” ambiance.

The bidding has reached $544,560 earlier this week. You’d think it’d be enough, but the owner felt it was not and canceled the sale.
