Automotive giant Volkswagen AG is preparing to launch a new compact crossover/SUV in the North and South American markets. Called ‘Tarek’, the vehicle is essentially a revised VW Tharu that originally debuted in China.
The new Volkswagen Tarek utilizes the MQB architecture and measures 4,468 mm (14.66 ft.) long, 1,841 mm (6.04 ft.) wide and 1,624 mm (5.33 ft.) tall with 2,681 mm (8.8 ft.) separating the axles.
The light off-roader comes powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine rated at 148 hp (110 kW). It will ship with a six-speed automatic transmission and FWD, but the company says it might add an AWD version to the lineup later.
According to VW’s Executive Manager Leonardo Ezcurra, the Tarek will sport a much bolder exterior design compared to its Chinese counterpart, and will bring along some interior improvements as well.
Once the model hits the market, it will mainly have to compete against the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Kuga/Escape, and Jeep Compass.
