Japanese tuner shows what a real Mazda RX-7 could look like

RE Amemiya, a famous Mazda specialist from Japan, has brought his own custom take on the RX-7 to the Tokyo Auto Salon. The build is heavily inspired by the Iconic SP Concept from two years ago and partly by the RX-Vision Concept from 2015.

The entire body and aero kit are new, so you’ll have to look closely at the roof and the glass dome even just to figure out what kind of car is in front of you. It’s 104 mm (4 inches) longer than the stock Mazda RX-7 and 165 mm (6.5 inches) wider, among other things.

It isn’t all about the looks, either. A completely overhauled 20B Wankel engine under the hood uses three rotors to send roughly 350 PS (345 hp / 258 kW) to the wheels. It does so using the six-speed manual transmission of the latest RX-8.

Isami Amemiya, the founder of RE Amemiya, explained in an interview that the idea to build his own rotary racecar came to him when he realized that Mazda would never mass-produce its Iconic SP Concept.

His efforts weren’t in vain: the project won the Grand Prize at the annual TAS contest dedicated to custom cars and tuning.
