GM hopes to outperform Tesla in EV sales

General Motors has announced its intention to become the leading electric vehicle manufacturer in North America, leaving Tesla far behind. To that end, the company will be developing several new EVs, including a particularly affordable one priced at around $30,000 USD.

The way things stand, General Motors is only second to Elon Musk’s corporation in sales volumes, but the gap is enormous. Unlike Tesla, the company also has to actually uphold its reputation, rather than rely on the charisma of its leadership. This means recalling all problematic Bolt EVs, which have been known to spontaneously combust.

Specific plans involve producing multiple battery cars based on the Ultium modular EV, a unitized architecture to be used by future CUVs with Cadillac and Buick badges, as well as full-fledged SUVs from Chevrolet, Hummer and GMC. The company holds particularly high hopes for an affordable $30,000 Chevrolet crossover.

In order to finance this growing branch of its business, GM will continue making and selling traditional ICE cars. By early 2030s, only a half of all GM-controlled industrial capacities will be retrofitted for EV production.
